I adopted a stray cat over four years ago, in another city and we have treated her well; she is quite content. She, however, has never taken to visitors and is not affectionate. I finally adopted today a sad, beautiful beagle from the shelter where I volunteer. I am really a dog lover and decided not to deny that experience. Although I tried to soothe the cat the when I brought the dog home today, there is no co-existence. I have a large fenced in back yard with deck. The cat is there now; not eating and seething. The dog is indoors. Can anyone advise? I am aware of the selfish aspect. Any suggestions.

Dear friend,

Cats and dogs are NOT natural enemies as many people think. As a matter of fect a cat will accept a dog faster than another cat because it is a different species and therefore no threat to the cats territory. What you are witnessing now is not seething anger - it is fear!!! The cat is afraid that the dog will hurt her. Do not try to .force them together - just give it time. Do not let the dog annoy her or rush at her. Remember this dog is subdued now because he is new and does not know where he fits into the pack but as he settles in he can became more aggressive and may even threaten the cat.

If possible, give the cat her own room where the dog cannot go for about a week. Let her venture out when SHE is ready. Make sure seh is eating or she can become quite ill.

All it tahes is a little patience and these guys will work things out. THey may never be the best of friends but they will tolerate each other as long as the dog does not become too pushy.

Please let me know if you still have questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
