For the last month, on and off, maybe half the time, my cat has had soft or loose stool and leaves it everywhere in the apartment. I have not fed her anything different than usual. She is 13 years old and has never been sick - but she is very neurotic. Is it time to take her to a Vet?

Dear friend,

When a cat has soft of loose stools she is likely to soil out of box because she does not want to step in it. Your girl may just have bad bacteria.Give her a teaspoon of plain yogurt every day. That contains acidophilus and will replace the "good" bacteria she needs in her colon. Also add vitamin E (200IU) to her food every day because somtimes cats on an all fish diet become deficient in that vitamin.

If the stool does not firm up in a week, she needs to be seen, Hoowever, since she is high strung see if you can get a mobile vet to come over. That way she will not endure the stress of travel or be exposed to other (potentially sick) cats.

Please let me know how she is and if you have further questions. I am happy to help,

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: I am sorry to answer so late - I was called away to a meeting in the office. One more thing - I forgot to mention that her stool is a dark - not her usual color - and I have a Christmas tree that she might be nibbling at while I'm not home. Do you think that affected her stool?

she may have nibbled pine needles or other christmas non food items. If there is any chance the "dark" is blood she should be seen or at least have your DVM do a fecal test on her. She may have a parasite or other easily solvable issue. Because of her age and her all fish diet she is at risk to develope liver issues.
