Question

We had scheduled our male cat for neutering a couple of weeks ago, kit

Sent to Cat Experts August 26, 2006 6:41 a.m.

Vet office is closed. It's pretty late. Brought home our male cat after neuter, and also stitches for laceration above one ear, which was quite extensive. Doc gave us amoxicillin, and somethng to treat a mild case of ear mites. No paid reliever. I have a DECIDEDLY miserable kitty, who is, I have noticed is pretty warm to the touch. Until I can get ahold of vet in the morning, is there a "people" analgesic that I can give in some minute amount to relieve discomfort and reduce possible onset of temp? We have 24 hour grocery and variety stores in the area, so if over the counter product designed for cats is available, I'm on my way to the store. Thanks!!! Hate to call after hours emergency at this point, however if advised I will do so. Thank you for gettng back to me as soon as you can.

Optional Information:
Age: 5; Male; Breed: Orange Tabby

Already Tried:
Nothing at all - afraid of drug interaction or incorrect dose. We have generic acetamenophen, ibuprofen, low dose aspirin in pill form.

Dear Customer (name blocked for privacy), thankyou for your question.

By all means do let your vet know what you are experiencing I believe he/she would want to know.

Go ahead and call ,leave an urgent message that you are concerned and would like medication for the cat's pain and/or have it seen.

Your vet may be able to help you over the phone. It would help if you could take your cats temperature.

Just a F.Y.I. -

You should never give medication to a cat without your vet's ok. Tylenol/acetaminophen and ibuprofen are poisonous to your cat and can be fatal.

The prompt and very emphatic response from "Just a F.Y.I." regarding the potentially fatal reaction in cats if provided medication tied to the top three pain relievers used for children and adults, clinched it for me. All entries were excellent and valuable. I know there are meds that are used to treat both animals and humans, such as the amox we carted home for kitty this afternoon. We have five other other animals in addition to our recently adopted Tom. I can tell you this service is just as important and just as needed as the staff who respond to the emergency call regarding our own medical emergencies, children's illnesses, injuries etc Will give the vet's "night crew" a call, just to be safe. By the way, I love the closing salutation. God Bless you as well. Will definately be returning to the site.
