Question

I have a cat who has suddenly stopped using the litterbox.

Sent to Cat Experts July 27, 2006 11:41 p.m.

I have a cat who has suddenly stopped using the litterbox. This is a new litterbox (the electronic kind), but we had a similar one before, so he's used to the motion and sound of it. He has been using the guest bed as his new litterbox. What can I do to stop this behavior?

Optional Information:
Age: 10; Male; Breed: short hair

Already Tried:
rubbing his face in the urine on the bed; holding him in the litterbox for 10 minutes or so; locking him in the bathroom for a few hours where the litterbox resides

Do you possibly have the old box?

How old is your male?

Is he urinating and having bowel movements on the bed?

What products have you used to clean with?

How many boxes are present in the house and how many cats do you have?

Thank you

Theresa

I don't have the old box - it was about 10 years old, and starting to not work properly, so I bought a new one (for $200!).

I had said the cat was 10, but I was thinking about it after I sent my request. He's actually 9.

Yes, he is urinating and having bowel movements on the bed.

I have been throwing the sheets into the washing machine, and spraying Febreze on the bed (which he's used to - I use it all the time, all over the house).

There is just the one box and one cat.

If it helps, I'm also using the same brand of litter that we've been using for years. Although, have switched on occasion, when the store is out of that brand, and he's never seemed to mind.

So far, he's only done this in the guest room, which is the only room he doesn't really hang out in on a regular basis, nor do I, for that matter.

It sounds like he doesn't like his new box at all. The rule of thumb for cats is to have one box per cat plus one extra and I understand that he did just fine before, but now that he has a box he isn't happy with adding an additional regular litter box might help him and you out while he adjusts to the new box, if he does. Maybe placing that extra box in the guest room with halt the issue. Also, the areas he has relieved himself need to be cleaned with a special enzymatic cleaner like Equalizer or Natures Miracle to remove the pet odor. He can still smell it even if you cannot. Febreeze just don't quite do the trick. I would use the equalizer on the mattress aswell and even consider flipping it. If you are not up to placing the extra box in the guest bedroom can you keep the room completely off limits altogether? Sometimes cats develop an aversion to the litter box for other reasons then just dislike. He might even have a urinary tract infection that if all attempts fail he should have looked into. Coincendental as it may seem this does happen and treatment may prove curative of the behavioral issues.

Good Luck

Theresa
