Question

cats eye problems

Sent to Cat Experts July 27, 2006 2:50 p.m.

i have an 18 year old neutered cat, stays in the house and has been very healthy. he seems to be losing his sight, but gets around all right.   last night he started meowing, and seemed totally out of it. could this be cataracts?   he seems better today in the daylight.   pupils last night were completely dilated, covering the iris.   today they look normal. appears to be fine red lines on the edges of the iris, in a zigzag pattern all round them.   he is eating, using litter pan.   once in while he will shake his head.   he seems a little disoriented at times. i would appreciate any input. thanks, sunny syrett

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Dear Sunny,

This can be the result of a sudden rise in blood pressure. This is very dangerous as his retinas could detach and/or he could have a stroke.

Ity can also be a disorder called veatbular disease - which comes from the middle ear and resembles motion sickness in humans. It is successfully treated with antibiotics:

Please have your senior cat evaluated by his vet ASAP. If his blood pressure is high enough to cause a stroke it can be treated but time is of the essence.

Please let me know how he is and if you stil have questions. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
