Question

I am not sure if my cats have fleas, mites, or something ...

Sent to Cat Experts July 24, 2006 11:13 p.m.

I am not sure if my cats have fleas, mites, or something else. They are both indoor cats but we live in an apartment with dogs and other animals that could have brought something in. How can I tell what they have? They both scratch and lick a lot, and one has black scabs around his eyes and ears. I even pulled off something flea-like. And I'm not sure if it is related, but there have been milipede-type insects found in our apartment lately, both alive and dead. I don't want to fog for fleas if it is something else. Please help!

It really sounds like flea's. There usually is signs of flea "dirt". This can usually be found near the runt by the tail. It looks just like dirt. I would get a good flea product for all the pets in your house. Something like Frontline is a very good product.

Thanks. Is treating the cats enough? Everything I am reading online says to treat the whole place, but we live in a small apartment and have nowhere to put everything or the animals while we treat. I don't see any "dirt" either. I put frontline on them in May as well. Shouldn't that have worked for several months?

Yes definately treat the whole place. I would see about boarding them for the day while you treat the house. Usually frontline works for about 1 month...2 if there's a low flea risk but you need to retreat on a regular basis.
