I would have the kitty checked by a vet, as eye problems can change rapidly and sometimes how quickly they are treated can determine the outcome. Holding the eye closed is a sign that the eye is painful. Common causes for these symptoms would include a corneal ulcer from a trauma (eye got scratched on something) or a viral infection (these have the potential to become chronic and recurrent and would actually be the the most likely diagnosis). Also to be considered would be having something stuck under the third eyelid that is causing irritation to the eye. Less common causes would include anterior uveitis (which is inflammation of the front part of the eye ball itself - a potentially very serious situation), glaucoma (not common in cats of this age) and keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye - also not common in cats) While just a mild irritation is possible, if there is something more serious going on, prompt treatment may make a difference as to whether there is any permanent damage to the eye.
Hope this info helps and your kitty is soon on its way to recovery Dr. B
