I'm fostering a 10 week old kitten. His growth is stunted (he only weighs 1 lb. -- the rest of his litter is over 2 lbs).   The main problem is that he is constipated. He strains but it is often unproductive. He is on lactulose (0.1 mL 2-3 times a day) which seems to help. Should I be worried if he goes 24 hours without a bowel movement? His appetite is fine, his energy level is a bit slow but he does play and groom himself. I would appreciate any comments or suggestions on how to manage this little guy!

24 hours is ok. 48 is a little more concerning. One of the best laxatives for these little guys is canned pumpkin (not pie filling). Just add 1 tsp to his meals and this will have a gentle laxative effect.

If this does not work, you are dealing with a bigger problem and need to see your vet.

Let me know if you still have questions.

Reply to Tammy Falkner's Post: I'm already using the canned pumpkin. I feel better knowing that 24 hrs. is not critical. Thank you.
