Question

my cat is sick and has been on antibiotics and fluid ...

Sent to Cat Experts October 07, 2005 2:54 a.m.

my cat is sick and has been on antibiotics and fluid theraphy for 3 days the vet said feline leukemia test was negative, her wbc count is 2,500 and the titer for carona virus(spelled wrong) something like what parvo is to dogs, is 400 so they do not know if it is that figure because she was vacinated or exposed. At first he said he thought it was blunt force trauma, or pancratitis and he was not worried about the 400 titer.he took an xray the intestines sit low, and there is a paratanial spave that might be fluid filled. He said the only way to be sure is exploratory surgury, which I do not want to put my cat through. how can we find out if her infection is the virus, verses a trauma without cutting her open. Is there a needle biopsy procedure that he can preform to extract some of the fluid , then send it for analysis? Is there a cure if she is positive?? if it is a trauma and she is bleeding inside wouldn't the needle biopsy show us that as well.
unless surgury will cure her I do not want to cut her open. if she had an infection or virus is there a strong anitbiotic that will help her fight???I have seen dogs survive destemer and parvo. my cat is 31/2 4 years old. when cats get thier vacinations isn't that virus a part of the package????

Is there a strong possibility of trauma (outside cat, sudden onset of illness)?

She is an inside cat , that two weeks ago was out for the night , a week or so later she threw up, then the next day was kind of slow in responding, or meeting me at the door, the third day she drooled was not eating and I took her to the vet.

I dont know if I did this right. two weeks ago she got out and was out for the night. a week later she threw up, I thought it was a hair ball. the next day she was lathargic (spelled wrong) and the day after was not eating and she was drooling, her stool is hard.

Showing signs a week later is a pretty slow reaction for trauma and unlikely. I would image she would be hurting if there was any internal damage done. However, it may be she had a slow bleed somewhere.
Does your vet have an ultrasound machine? This could be used to visualize the abnormality seen in her abdomen.
Even though animals are vaccinated for certain diseases, no vaccine is 100% effective. The animal has to have a competant immune system to build resistance.

you did not answer if a needle aspiration to drain the fluid would answer if the cat has fip

Yes, anything is possible with FIP, and abdominal tenderness would be present especially with the effusive form where they can accumulate fluid in the abdomen and/or chest. If she has diffuse fluid build-up in the belly, it would be possible to tap the belly to withdraw fluid for analysis. If this is one possible diagnosis that your vet is considering, here is some more info in FIP:

This is the first time in the three years I have had callie, that she is sick I do not want her to suffer nor do I want to put her down without being sure. if I am slowly getting it, if it is fluid in the abdomen, then it is highly like it is fip. and very unlikly it is anything else. this will be the last time I ask questions. Your answers have given me a way to atleast communicate with my vet. to decide what next to do.

I wrote a reply to you in the wrong section Did you get it? can you read it in the question and answer section. It basically states that if it is indeed fluid in the abdomen most likely fip, unlikely anything else. Is this correct??
