persian cat eye discharge

I am wondering if you can offer some advice. I have a beautiful female persian cat. She just turned 2 years old this past December. From Day 1, she has had an awful discharge coming from her eyes that is a brownish-reddy colour. I understand that this type of breed can face a discharge because of their “smooshed” faces. I wash her face daily – 3 times a day, and the discharge is still there. I have given her prescribed eye drops for this from a regular vet, but nothing seems to help for any length of time. It stains her beautiful fur, and when she shakes her head, the discharge goes all over the floor. I had also been given pills for her but I have a really hard time giving them to her. They seem to help for a little period of time, but when I stop the drops and/or the pills, the discharge comes back full again.

I don't know if there is a cure (as ultimately, this is what I am looking for), but any information you may have, I would certainly appreciate this!

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: Hi Cher: Yes, it is reddish-rust in colour. The name of the medication I have given her is Pentasone (eye drops) and Delta Alboplex (sp?)(pills). I have also changed her food thinking that diet might help. I now feed her "Solid Gold Katz-N-Flocken" (made with fresh lamb meat). It is a dry food. Ultimately, I am looking for a more natural "cure" rather than keeping her on drops and pills. Do you have experience with this type of problem yourself?
Thanks, Kate

Thanks Cher. I think I will go to get a second opinion as she does have redness in her eyelids, but it doesn't seem to be bothering her (which may not be conjunctivitis). She doesn't scratch at her eyes, or rub them. Only one more question... have you heard if using some kind of powder in their eyes will help to dry up the "goop"?(after washing her face)?

Hi again, Kate.

I've found a wonderful site for you with info re: Persian cats.

I think the powder you're speaking of might be Tetracycline powder, but you'll be able to see more information here:

I wouldn't use anything without first checking with a vet.

I hope your cat's eyes are improved very soon and
thank you for your patience!

Cher : )
