CATS URINATING IN THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sent to Cat Experts September 19 08:28 PM

we have 4 indoor cats,1 10 yr old spayed female,1 5 year old spayed female,1 8 year old neutered male,1 2 year old neutered male. we love them with all of our hearts!! they have ALL been urinating all over my house and we feel as though they are destroying our home and we are being taken over by them. they started urinating a little here and a little there, and now it is out of control, they DO use their litter boxes,we keep them very clean and we have 6 litterboxes for the 4 cats and have tried every trick there is!!! rather than finding homes for them, that would break our hearts,we thought that maybe we could get a massive crate for them and let them out when supervised? or even crate them with their boxes to "retrain" them???????

You have a massive job ahead of you. My guess is that at least one of them has a urinary tract infection and that is what started this whole thing. Either that or there is a huge stress factor going on in the house that they can't deal with. They definitely need to be vet checked to rule out infection. Next, you will have to confine them to one room so that you can get the urine out of the rest of the house. You need an enzymatic cleaner that is designed for pet urine such as Zero Odor (www.zeroodor.com). Once you have that done, you need to purchase a cat litter called Cat Attract - this will help enormously in getting everyone going back in the litter box. It has been treated to attract cats to use the box. You may also need to purchase a feliway plugin to help with this - it has phermones that tend to relax cats and help them do things the way they are expected to. You will probably need to keep them confined until everyone is using the box 100% of the time. If there is anyone you catch NOT using the box, you may have to crate them in a large queen cage with litter and food/water and retrain in there. It will be work - but you can get it under control. My best guess is that the older kitty may be the original problem starter. Start with that one to see who has the infection and go from there.

Good luck! Let me know how things go.

is it better to out one cat in each room? or all of them together in one room?

I'm sorry. I wasn't very clear on that, was I? Only use the Cat Attract in some of the boxes. Don't use it in all of them because it may have a different texture than what they are used to. Use the regular litter in 3 and the Cat Attract in 3. That way they have a choice.

Reply to Lori's Post: so youre saying to keep all 4 cats together in one room with the 6 litter boxes cat attract in 3 boxes and not in the other 3. WISH ME LUCK!!!!
and you dont think its best to keep them separated (1 cat and 1 litter box in 1 room until the problem is corrected individually?)

If you have the room to isolate everyone individually, then that would be fantastic. The thing you need to do is to find out who has the problem that started this whole snowball rolling and get the urine removed from everywhere before giving them access to a specific area. That was why I suggested confining everyone to one room - so you could get the rest of the house urine free - at THAT point, then you can divide them up to see who is doing what and where. Once the urine is removed from floors and furniture, then it will be a lot easier to deal with these guys.
