Cat coughing?

Sent to Cat Experts September 20 01:40 PM

Good afternoon. I do animal rescue and am a bit worried about one of my recent cat rescues. She has been in foster care at my house for about 2 months. There has been the sniffles going around between the kittens and cats and it seems as soon as we get one over it then another one gets it.   One of our female cats started doing something a bit strange a few days ago. It almost sounds like she's coughing or trying to choke something up (but not like the hairball choke sound). She did throw up a little bile yesterday but appears to be eating. What do you think it might be? A cold? Choking? Thanks for all your help! Heather

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer?

It sounds as though your thoughts about the "sniffles" going around is right on track. However, as long as any discharge is clear and doesn't last for too long, I do believe you are dealing with just a cold or mild allergies.

If the "sniffles" turns to a yellowish/greenish discharge, I would certainly suggest having your vet check her right away as you may be dealing with an infection.

I hope this helps. If you need further information, please feel free to contact me.

Reply to Tammy's Post: So, you think that cough/hack/choke sound is from a possible cold too? Why does it sound so different? Just wanted to make sure she's not choking or anything.... Thank you!

Hello,

If you think the sound you are hearing is more like choking, I would suggest having your vet take a look at her, especially if it is frequent.

If she is eating and drinking, without coughing/choking, then I wouldn't be concerned about something lodged in her throat, but I would monitor her closely to be sure.

I hope this helps. If you need further information, please feel free to contact me.

Reply to Tammy's Post: Thank you for the response! I promise this will be my last question... it appears as though she may have thrown up some bile today also... would that go along with the cold? It looks like I may end up having to take her in to the vet but the rescue has already spent so much on these cats already and as you know in rescue, funds are very limited, unfortunately... :( Thanks!
