Kitten using litter box

we just adopted our kittens (main coons) 2 weeks ago. they were limited to our bedroom
with their litter in the adjoining bathroom. they used the litter immediately . after the first
week we allowed them to roam our apartment, our little boy used our living room rug behind the couch instead of the litter box. we shampooed the area & kept them back into the bedroom for an additional week, as soon as we let them roam free again he does the same thing. Help !
