Our female cat, Precious, gave birth to five kittens seven weeks ago. Yesterday, we let her out (as we always do); however, it has been 36 hours and she has not returned. We suspect she may be in heat, and may be mating. Is it normal behavior for a female cat to disappear for a day or for several days while she is mating? What is the longest we would expect to wait for her to return, before assuming she is missing?

This can be normal if it has been seven weeks but a day and a half is a long time for even a cat in heat. If she is not home by the morning at the latest you need to start a search and put up some flyers, being out all night could be possible but this is getting a bit long even for a female in heat. Unless she has done this in the past, I would start being concerned by morning.
