I have a male kitten, approx. 12 weeks old. Has been just fine, healthy and rambunctious up until today. Now he appears to have loss of appetite, lethargy and mucus in the stool. His eyes are still quite clear, though. He has had a terrible flea infestation and we have given him several baths with flea soap and placed a flea collar on him. Could his symsptoms be a result of the flea treatments, or are these the sign of something more serious?

Has he had any of his routine vaccinations yet? How is he this morning?

Dear Dr. McLaughlin,

Thank you so much for your response. We can't afford a vet, but are genuinely concerned about our little guy. (We are REAL cat people - ours are honestly like children to us.)

He has not had any of his vaccinations yet because we've only had him a few weeks and haven't been able to afford it yet. He will also be neutered at that time. He is an indoor ONLY cat and lives in a very pampered multi-cat environment, but none of the others are displaying any signs of ill health.

This morning he seemed hungry and he chased me to the kitchen to ask for his breakfast. But he still isn't eating when I serve him his regular food. He tries to eat, then acts as though he just doesn't like the smell or flavor of his food and he won't eat it. He just scratches around the bowl like he's burying it. He's normally a little pig! He is running and acting normally otherwise, although he is a bit lethargic and sleeping a great deal. I may have forgotten to say that he also vomited once yesterday.

His symptoms began very soon after he had a flea bath. Is it possible he ingested some of the flea shampoo by licking his fur afterwards? Would that give him an upset stomach, vomiting and loss of appetite? Would that show up in his stool and look like mucas? He is still urinating and defecating regularly.

Could he be teething? I noticed that he pawed at his mouth a little when he tried to eat his breakfast. (We checked inside the mouth and looked down the throat, but there doesn't seem to be anything abnormal in there that we can see.)
