Question

Hello, I feed some stray kittens that live in my backyard

Sent to Cat Experts March 11, 2006 9:28 p.m.

Hello,
I feed some stray kittens that live in my backyard regularly and have devised a shelter for them. Unfortunately I can not get close enough to them to bring them to the vet for shots and getting them fixed. After a severe snow storm about a month ago one of the kittens @ 9 months began coughing a lot. He has stoped eating the last two days and has distanced himself from his siblings, he seems out of breath at times too. Is there anything I could do for the poor thing?

Depending where you live you can get help from your local animal shelter. You can ask to borrow a have-a-heart-trap to catch them and bring them to the vet. How old do you think they are? Does the mother still hang out with them?

I'm going to give you a website that is from an organization that helps feral cat populations by getting people who volunteer to trap, neuter and return them to where they were found. You should look to see if anyone is in your state or area that can assist you in getting your little colony free medical care, spay and neuter, vaccinations, and help in rescuing any of the kittens that are young enough for easy socialization. Some of these organizations also help with building and supplying extra shelters if needed.

If you are not up to buying your own have-a-heart-trap and finding a vet who can assist you with one day spay/neuter procedures and guidance on how to do post op at your home, this problem is going to grow very quickly and the cats will actually start to become very unhealthy. Which will most likely break your heart since you already have a deep love and concern for them. The mother will probably have another 4 or 5 kittens within the next month. And the 9 month old kittens that are females will possibly each have their own litter of 4-5 kittens anywhere between April and August. So you are looking at a colony of about 5 possibly increasing to 20-25 by the end of summer. And that will be only to find out that they will be having more kittens late fall. See how quick it grows. Much cheaper to take care of it now, even if you have to pay yourself.

If you decide to take on the challenge yourself, you can always post to me for advice and assistance in your endeavor. I have loads of experience in this area from trapping, clinic work and surgery recovery room, at home post op, socializing, caring for abondaned or captured newborn kittens. Good luck.
