Male Kitten about a year old acting crazy

My cat is about a year old. He was born in a barn with other cats and kittens. Charlie chased his tail for a period when he was younger. He would go weeks or months and not pay any attention to his tail. Then he would start again only getting worse each time howling and growling at his tail or it's shadow. Now he is worse than ever with screaming, howling and biting his tail until it bleeds. In the middle of the night he wakes up at the slightest noise and starts screaming and growling. It sounds like a big cat fight but it is just his tail.   Charlie is very stressed about his tail. I tease him about getting it cut off so it won't bother him. I am not sure if he is crazy or sick. I have been trying to read about different diseases and can't find anything that could cause this. Do you have any ideas?
Thank you,
Kaye

Hi Kaye-

He actually could have a neurological defect that is causing him to feel pain in his tail. If he seems to be in as much pain as you indicate, you definitely should take him in and let the vet see if they can make a determination as to what the problem is. This is definitely not normal behavior for your cat and is somewhat worrisome! Please let me know if I can help further and what your vet says.
