Question

raising a kitten in a multianimal household.

Sent to Cat Experts June 08, 2006 6:49 p.m.

My dog chased two baby kittens up a tree. One got away and I caught the other one. I took her to the vet and she got her first distemper shot. The vet estimated her age to be about 6-7 weeks. I decided to give the kitten to a friend of mine that owns a pet store to find it a good home. Only I became very attached in the week I had her and am considering taking her back. My concern is I have an umbrella cockatoo and of course the dog that chased her up the tree. The dog seems to like her as she likes all things small... It is the bird I am worried about. Is it possible to raise a kitten in a house with a dog and a parrot? If so, what are the best things I could do to raise the kitten harmoniously with my other animals?

Dear friend,

The best thing you could do is initially keep the baby kitten separated from the dog and bird unless you can supervise -until the kitten gets bigger and can defend himself. Dogs tend to play very roughly and with their mouths. They can inadvertantly injure or kill a young kitten. A bird with a sharp bill is also a threat.

These aimals can all live harmoniously with each other. Cats are very smart - they learn quickly not to threaten larger animals and to get out of the way when necessary. Birds usually take a "whatever"attitude and are not going to bother you unless you bother them first. Since the dog likes to chase cats - you will have to work on this by telling him NO! and Sit! and STAY! when appropriate.

Good luck with your lovely little varied family. I can see you love all animals as I do.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
