Dear friend,
Here is the best way to make this easy on your resident cat.
Take a damp washcloth and rub it all over her body, especially her neck and legs and tail (scent glands are in those areas). Before you bring the kitten in, take the cloth and rub it all over him in the same areas. Now your cat will recognize her own scent when she sniffs him.
Initially, put him in a room where he has a safe spot to retreat (like under a bed).
Expect to hear some hissing and even growling as this is how cats communicate.
THe kitten will most likely bow to the resident cats authority and stay back but do not leave them alone together until, you are sure they are getting along.
Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be very happy to help in any way possible.
Warmest best wishes,
Terri

What if they don't get along at this point?

After they are both rubbed, put the kitten in a bedroom where he can retreat under a bed if he is frightened. Then let your cat sniff him under the door. If she seems interested - you can open the door and let her go in.
It is likely she will hiss and warn him off anyway since cats no NOT take kindly to other cats even if they recognize the scent. He will most likely go under the bed. They will then not actually confront each other but will sit a few feet apart for two or three days just getting used to eachothers sight and scents. The newcomer will stay back and allow your cat to make the first move. This cat introduction and acceptance can take up to a week.
It is best if you just observe this process and let it proceed naturally. Only interfere if a fight seems iminent.
As long as they are just watching each other it is best to let them establish a bond(or at least a truce) by themselves.
