Question

FIV Feline Skin Problems

Sent to Cat Experts February 28, 2005 8:09 p.m.

My FIV cat keeps getting skin pumps that he scratches and causes bleeding. He’s been on Gentocin topical 72 ml mostly on rather than off it since 1/21/05. He rarely gets to live without his collar. I don’t want to give him a cortisone shot because of his FIV. Is there some other treatment for these skin bumps...Perhaps an ointment I have on hand that I use for my psorasis...Fluocinonide 0.05% ointment? I asked my vet but she didn’t know what was in it. Or that over-the-counter white rash cream that is called hydrocorisone (I think)?

This cat was a street kitty I saved in Hollywood, so I call him Charlie, my Hollywood Hobo.

Thanks for any help you can give. Stephanie, Torrance, CA

 Hi Stephanie,

Has your vet determined the cause of these bumps on Charlie or is this something of recent?

Did this start beginning with the use of Gentocin?  OR

Does the Gentocin seem to relieve the symptoms?

If you would answer these questions I may be able to guide you better as to what you can use to treat Charlie - thanks!

Hi Oliver's Mom,
Thanks for your reply. These bumps have been around since January. Gentocin does help long term. I was hoping there would be a home remedy/OTC product that may help relieve this. The doctor says it is allegies.

Thanks again for your help. Stephanie

 Hi Stephanie,

The main problem with a OTC med/treatment is cats are very sensitive to these type of products - especially those, like yours, that already have their health compromised.

For more of a natural remedy - Aveeno products are suppose to be very good for cats and dogs with skin problems.  Along with oatmeal, baking soda or epsom salt baths.

However I would hope to control the underlying problem - the allergies -because no matter what we do on the 'outside,' the 'inside' problem will still exist.  Because you didn't say a specific allergy, I'm assuming you do not know.  Would it be possible to have your vet refer you to a skin disorder/allergist specialist?  What about different food?  Food allergies are very common in cats and switching to an allergen free or all natural food can greatly benefit.

Assuming this has not been going on for his entire life, can you think back as to when it started - what could have changed in his environment back then?  Food, litter, bedding, laundry detergent, your soap or lotion, and so on.  I really suggest the need to find out the specific allergy your cat is suffering from so we can resolve the entire problems he is having.  Make sense?

Let me know what you think...
