Male Feline Pattern Baldness?

I have a mixed breed male cat named Soldier that has developed a bald spot on his hind end just above his tail.It has the appearance of having been shaved and is not red or irritated as a hot spot would be. The fur is regrowing in previously balding areas while coming out in others. The area is approx the size of a tennis ball and Soldier has paid little or no attention to his problem. Any ideas from the specialists? Thanks a lot, Richard
