Our Maine Coon male, spade, has been sneezing several

Sent to Cat Experts May 08 12:01 PM

Our Maine Coon male, spade, has been sneezing several times a day since Nov. of 05.At that time he weighed about 18 lbs. Now he eats little and weighs just under 10lbs.
During his lifetime he has not been allowed outside and his communication with other animals is zero. Our local vet does not know what the cat's problem is. Within the past 4 days he has started "howling" to the extent that it is difficult for us to sleep. I feel that he is trying to get our attention about something, but I am at a loss as to what. Pain?
When I call his name he stops. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The sneezing might be due to a nasal polyp or tumor or a foreign object sniffed up into the nasal area.
You didn't say how old he was but a dental issue can also cause sneezing if a tooth abcess drains into the nasal area.
If you have not had bloodwork done you might want to check liver, kidney and heart function.
Howling often goes along with pain, but some cats will cry because of hormone imbalances and really old animals may vocalize at night due to a congnitive problem.
If your vet has not been able to help you then you might consider consulting a veterinarian who specializes in small animal internal medicine and this site may help you find one

Reply to nholmes's Post: thank you. All the specialists listed, are 3 to 6 hours from here. Any recomendations for Naples or Ft.Myers, Florida, which is about 40 miles.
Incidentally our cat howls all day and night. A blood chemistry was reported as negative. A chest xray was negative. He is about 13 years old.

If you did a standard blood chem it might not have been run for thyroid - thats usually a seperate blood test.
You might try here for a list of FL specialists and look for feline specialists in your area there do seem to be some

Reply to nholmes's Post: Our cat also had a negative thyroid test. He has lost 50% of his original body weight. You mentioned that you thought there are specialists
somewhat close to me. I tried finding one on the
suggested web site but could find noe. Would you reccommend one, please.

Naples listed two feline specialists
Frances J. Collier, VMD

and
Jeanette L. Sisco, DVM
at
Cat Care Clinic of Naples

Ft Meyers listed one
Matthew Gatof, DVM
The Cat Hospital of Fort Myers

If you can't find a internal medicine specialist someone who specializes in treating cats would be a good second choice.
