My cat has coughing fits and he has always weezed. I took him to the vet and they gave him a cortizone shotand he was better for a while but now he is back to coughing. He never coughs anything up nor does he vomit but his fits are very bad.

The vet doesn't really know. Yes they gave him a x-ray and discovered his lungs are very small. He is also a very large cat 26 lbs but this is not from over eating. They said something about an ultra sound but that is very expensive. The coughing is not seasonal its new. Arthur is about 7 years and I have had him since he was 6 weeks old. He has always weezed and the cotisone didn't help him for more then a couple weeks and I don't belive that its good for him. What should I do?

Hello,

I suspect from the sound of what you have told me that this may be feline asthma. That is why the cortisone worked so well.

Asthma is a recurring respiratory problem that occurs when the lung airways constrict due to stimuli which normally should not cause a reaction. With your baby's lungs being small for his body that will make things worse. Airways swell and inflammation can cause the muscles go into spasm leading to constriction. Coughing, and wheezing can be signs of feline asthma. At times only a chronic cough is the sign of Asthma, but it can turn into an acute asthmatic crisis if left untreated.

There are treatments that can be given that would help as it does in human Asthma. There are daily medications like Theophylline which has been proven effective as well as new medications that have just been approved. Joan Jav917
