cat meowing
Sent to Cat Experts June 19 02:36 PM

I have done all kinds of reading on it. Tried spraying with a water gun, locking him in a room.... nothing works, HELP! My cat meows all morning. Starting around 5 AM. He is 8 years old and been doing it for ever. He is excellent health, and has a very loveing home. I give him loads of attention. When he starts meowing, I try to ignore him. Then he steps on my face, and starts to pull my hair if that dosen't work. If I lock him out he slams against the door so hard I fear he is hurting himself. If I spray him with water, he runs away and comes right back doing the same behavior. I don't know what to do.
None of the advice I look up works. I need help.

Optional Information:

Reply to Nancy Holmes's Post: No he isn't an only cat, and never has since birth. He tends to get more attention, do to the fact that he is more needy. The other cats like to be left alone. He never has been that playful, even as a baby he just seems to not care for toys. But I always try, and have tons of toys for the other cats. I always say he is a lover, he follows me everywhere and likes to cuddle. I give all the cats dry food in the mornings, sometimes they dodn't eat all of it, and eat through out the day. Then I give them canned food at night usually around 7-8. You see I have asked my vet as well, nothing works. I would be so greatful if you had any advice, I am at my end. i was hopeing he would change will age, but no. Thank you, I look forward for your thoughts.

You are his sibling, playmate, and favorite toy it sounds like.
I can give you some things to try and some suggestions on where to get more help.
Play with him before you go to bed. Try to get him really tired. Toys, a laser pointer, whatever he really likes might work to help tire him out. Even if you just pick him up and put him away from you so he races back. Sometimes exercise really helps the cats.
You might try using a self feeding method on the dry food so the cat isn't really hungry in the morning and doesn't need you to get up to fill the cat bowl.
If he is part siamese or abysinian then it may be a part of his basic nature.
You can also try a dose of catnip before bedtime - that can make some cats sleep in longer.
If you want to tray another aversive try a soda can with a few pennies in it and tape over the hole. When he bothers you shake that. Sometimes the noise startle is enough of an aversive to end a behavior. You may need to be more persistant than he is though.
Now for alternatives - consider seeing a veterinary behaviorist who may be able to prescribe a med and give you a behavior modification plan to help you retrain the cat to stop the early morning annoyance.
Your vet can refer you to this specialist hopefully.
Hope this helps you!
