Question

Can cats catch colds? If so is there a home remedy?

Sent to Cat Experts November 12, 2006 9:45 a.m.

I think my one year old cat has a cold.Perhaps it's allergy's? He is sneezing constantly and is very mucusy. My other 2 kitties are fine . He doesn't seem to be miserable just annoyed with his condition. It's also a little gross, bless his heart. will he just get over it? Are there herbs or over the counter treatments? This has been going on about a week now.

Hello,

Thank you for sending your question to Just Answer!

Cats can certainly catch colds which does cause sneezing. Allergies can cause these symptoms as well, however if the discharge or mucus that you are seeing is a yellowish/greenish color, you are possbily dealing more with an infection which needs to be treated with antibiotics prescribed by your vet. I would also be concerned that it has been going on for a week now.

If you are finding the mucus to be a clear color and suspect it to be allergies rather than a cold, this is an excellent web site with information to determine first, if this is truly allergies and remedies you can use.
