Sent to Cat Experts October 24, 2006 8:38 a.m.

good morning. i'm not sure if my 4 year old female is sick, injured or just has her "nose out of joint". she's been hidding since saturday after one of my 4 year old males was "playing" with her. he can be a bully. she's eating if i bring her food, she purrs if i scatch her chin, drinks water when i bring her out of hidding, but seems to be walking slower than normal. i'm not sure if i should give it a day or so before calling the vet to see if she comes around of if i should take her now just in case. any advise would be greatly appreciated. she scquacks if you pick her up ... but she's always done that, not really crazy about being picked up ... but can cuddle at night in bed. thank you!

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Hi,

Have you noticed if she's using the litterbox normally? If not, she could have a urinary or intestinal problem or blockage, which is causing her to walk more slowly or gingerly.

However, since it's already been 4 days since she's exhibiting this behavior, I'd definitely have her evaluated by the vet, today. From your description of how she's acting, there's possibility that she WAS injured while playing with your male cat and if he's somewhat of a 'bully', he may have cornered her or caused her to jump down from a height (or she could have fallen) and this caused injury.

If it's not her nature to hide, there's definitely something wrong; cats will hide when they don't feel well and/or are in pain. Having her checked over by the vet and getting a definite diagnosis and then appropriate treatment, would be your best course of action at this time.

I hope it's something minor, and she's feeling much better, soon! Please let me know the vet's findings. Thanks!

Cher

thank you, cher. after also speaking with a friend who fosters cats for our local spca, i'm going to give her another day or so and then go the vet route. she's actually moved herself out to my living room and is "hiding" behind an end table so at least it's not behind a chair or under the bed. she's even trying to be a wee bit playful. she loves to play with small paint brushes and when i move it across the floor in front of her she's watching it intently. thank you so much for your advise. and i'll let you know what i find out or if she gets any better.
