(Not a Cat Question?)

can cats take antacids and how much?

Sent to Cat Experts December 04 05:09 PM

I still do not know if it is safe to give a cat an antacid of any
sort..and how much to give. Which was my original question.
The cipro was given by our vet...she tends to quit eating once it
gets into her system.
Please note I am speaking of a feline, not canine..thanks so
much.

You can IF your cat does not have kidney problems or is being treated for high sodium or potassium; also, kittens should not be given antacids.

Give antacids with food; Tums, Pepcid or Maalox; 50 mg/lb/day DIVIDED to be given 2-3 x's day.

PLEASE NOTE:  I do NOT advice you to give your cat ANY type of medication, even antacids, without first consulting with your vet.  I have no idea if there would be a problem taken with Cipro.

Dr V - if you're out there - any comments?

Reply to Olivers Mom's Post: my vet gave Julie the Cipro...we have not discussed a possible
antacid. This is her third round of antibiotics...she is 16 and I
hate that she is sick.

thanks,

Julie is a cat! I know their systems are much more delicate than
canines.

UGH!  I'm SO SORRY!  Shame on me for not paying more attention to what I'm writing!  Alright, let's try this again...

See information from my first post - verifying your CAT does not have any kidney/liver problems and what type of antacids you can try.

If I find any thing else that may help you, I'll be sure to get back in touch.

Try feeding her prior to giving the cipro. Antibiotic's tend to upset their stomachs so if you feed prior to her meal then it will coat the stomach. If this doesn't work then I would speak to your vet and maybe he can change it to one that wouldn't upset her system as much.

Good luck!
