Sent to Cat Experts October 15, 2006 2:38 a.m.

I have noted lately that my cat Mz. Fancy seemed to have vision problems. When she was sitting in my lap this evening I noted what appeared to be a thin slight opaque film over both eyes tha was very wrinkled. Sort of frosty with texture. She is in good health other wise and was to the vet about two months ago and nothing was noted then.

She is about ten and a half years old and quite over weight.

I am sorry but I am on a very limited SS check and live in subsidised housing.

Thankyou

REPLIED Check Mark

Hi Marion,

From your description, it sounds like either Mz. Fancy has developed cataracts, or her third eyelids are showing. The third eyelid, or nictating membrane, comes from the inside corner of the cat's eye and moves across the eye partially or completely, when there's general illness in the body, and/or when there's a specific problem with the eye(s).

Cataracts may occur in older cats, just as in humans. If Mz. Fancy was at the vet about two months ago, should have noticed some cataracts beginning, or perhaps it just started after you saw the vet.

In any case, it would be best to have Mz. Fancy's eyes checked at the vet's to get a definite diagnosis and treatment, if necessary. The following websites may help you find a lower cost vet, or one who will waive the fee, if you explain your circumstances and the fact that your cat was just seen two months ago:

and this one contains links to other sites:

Please keep me updated on how she's doing and let me know what the vet says. Thanks! I hope she'll be fine!

I didn't learn anything I did not know. What I hadn't known is that the nictating membrane would ever stay closed. I had the impression that like a birds it washed the eye while allowing some sight through it.

This morning she awoke bright eyed and bushy tailed. Thank you for your response.
