A small amount of blood has appeared in our 6 yr old torti's blood... 2 years ago she was peeing in the sink and had noticeable crystals in her urine... we took her to the vet, got a pill, and the symptoms and behavior cleared up. This is the first issue w/her since then.   We changed to a lactose free food a couple months ago becuase of throwing up issues with our other cats... maybe science diet was better for her?... we/ve been buying lactose free Friskies instead.   Is there something we could give here to clear up her urinary tract and keep it healthy?
Thanks,

If there's blood in the urine, she's going to need to be on antibiotics again even though I really hate saying it. Two years between infections really is pretty good - usually, when a cat developes a urinary tract infection, it seems to be a chronic thing that recurs every few months. You might try giving her ONE DROP of unsweetened cranberry juice every morning once you get this cleared up as that will help bring the urine's ph to the correct level and hopefully avoid the problem in the future. Adding canned food to her diet will also raise the moisture content in her gut and may also help prevent the problem down the road.

Please let me know if I can assist further.

Reply to Lori's Post: What intibiotic would you reccomend?... My wife and I are really broke right now and I'm trying to save the cost of going to the vet... I will purchase the product online if possible.
Thanks in advance,
Deric

Hi Deric-

The safest is either clavamox or amoxcillin. Both are used with equal frequency, although personally I think clavamox does a better job.
