Question

Why is my cat vomiting?

Sent to Cat Experts October 05, 2006 8:07 p.m.

My new cat (a stray rescue that I've had 3 months, estimated to be about 2 years old), has recently begun vomiting pale yellow to light brownish, odorless fluid each night around 3:30 - 5:00 a.m., after she has been sleeping most of the night. She received a clean bill of health from teh vet before i brougt her home, including 2 dewormings and an involved spay procedure where teh vet had to use deep stitches to "anchor" weak reporductive organs). Negative FIV and leukemia tests. She had pretty sever anxiety about food early on, eating everythign we'd give her at any time of day or night. Subsequently, we starting keeping an "auto-feeder" filled at all times, because she was eating my other cat's food, too. (We took teh auto-feeder away last week because our new girl is getting a little chubby). Other than the vomitng, she is her usual energetic self. Nothing unusual found in the litter box, and out other cat displays no signs of illness. They are both indoor-only cats. Any ideas??

This may be bile reflux syndrome where when the stomach is empty, bile from the intestines goes into the stomach instead of going down the intestines. This bile is very irritating to hte stomach and will cause vomiting. There is amedicine your vet can prescribe called metoclopramide that helps this condition. It makes the stomach and the upper part of the intestine contract toward the intestine so the bile can't go back to the stomach. If the cat is doing this at night, then you would give it before you go to bed.
