Hi Gina-
Cats normally have a brownish or 'bloody' colored tear. It's not clear like human tears are. If you are seeing an excessive amount of drainage from your cat's eyes, he may be developing a mild case of conjunctivitis. You can try an over the counter antibacterial eye ointment called Terramycin in his eyes twice a day to see if there is any improvement. You can get it at most pet supply stores or online at www.revivalanimal.com. If there is no improvement in 2 or 3 days, or if the eye drainage gets worse, or if your cat developes sneezing or nasal discharge also, then he needs to go into the vet for a different eye medication as well as an oral antibiotic for the upper respiratory infection.
