Reply to Jessesmom's Post: He eats normally and eliminates normally to my knowledge. I have two cats.He suddenly got up when I was with him in the backyard and started to walk like he was losing his balance and his back legs were stretched out. I then went over to him and he had this stiff tense appearance. I walked over to his food bowl and he came walking over like nothing happened.I noted that he sometimes takes long drinks at the water bowl.I hope this helps.

Hi again, and thank you for the additional information; yes, it was helpful! : )

I'm trying to determine if your cat is on Hill's Prescription foods to control his weight, or has he been diagnosed as diabetic? w/d and m/d Prescription foods are usually prescribed for diabetic cats and for weight loss (mine is on m/d and he's diabetic).

The symptoms you mention: drinking a lot more lately, hindleg weakness/stiffness, and disorientation, can all be symptoms of diabetes; however, in older cats there are also other conditions which may be possibilities with these symptoms, like hyperthyroidism, kidney or liver dysfunction, or stroke.

Losing his balance may have had to do with the temporary weakness in his hind legs, but there's a condition called vestibular syndrome that affects the ears and can also affect balance.

The best thing you can do for your cat at this time is bring him to the vet ASAP for routine bloodwork, including a thyroid (T4) test. Your vet will evaluate him after you describe the symptoms you've mentioned here, and appropriate treatment will be prescribed.

Please let me know what the vet tells you and I hope your boy will be just fine!
