I have a cat that has a problem with his furr matting from ...

I have a cat that has a problem with his furr matting from the neck to the tail. I'm not sure what could be causing it there has been no change in food. He is strickly an inside cat. He about 12 yrs old. Is there anything that can be done other than brushing him, that is extremely difficult.
