Reply to Terri Riba's Post: The cat and kittens are in a cage outside on our back patio. I have put bamboo around the cage so she is enclosed. Then I put cardboard around the inside the bamboo so the kitten would not crawl throught the cage. I feed her on one end with a litter box. The kittens are on the other end of the cage.

Dear friend,

It is very unlikely the mommy cat ate her baby unless she was actually starving and I am sure that was not the case.If a baby is sick, sometimes mom will kill it to protect the others but your would see blood, etc. Somehow the baby must have crawled out and is hiding nearby. Search everywhere and under everything. The only other possibility is some neighbor took one out.

Please let me know if you find it. I will stand by to hear from you.

Best of luck,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: I have checked all around the area. Under and aroud pots and bushes. I have alot of those around the cage. I have been feeding her twice a day so I know she is not hungrey. I was gone for two days and my son was feeding her and she has been eating good. No one could reach in and get a kitten she would rip them apart. Maybe the kitten did get out some how and could other anmials get the kitten. We have an encosed yard but we have other cats & racoons that come and go. How long can a one week old kitten live out without it's mom???

It could not live more then 48 hours. It is very possible another animal took it. But if you have a flashlight you should check every nook and cranny beause you would not believe where it could hide. And it will be real quiet because of instinct.

How did you capture mommy if she is so wild?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: My husband and I just tore the yard apart looking with a flashlight. Nothing.
I friend lent me a cat trap. I was feeding her for months. Then for about a week I started putting the food in the trap. She was very scare to enter it but hunger prevailed. I let her eat food in the tap for a week before setting it. I caughter 6 days before she had her kitten. Now I will let her stay with her kitten until they are big enough to take them away. She will then go to my vet to be fixed. I will make sure the kittens are tame before finding homes for them. She had a other litter of kitten about 6 months ago. Only one kitten survived. I caught her and took her in and had her fixed. I am feeding her also. She is feral also but not as wild as her mom. The kitten are beautiful. But I am a total animal lover. So all is beautiful. We live by an over pass to the freeway and alot of cats get dumped off here. Trying to keep the population down and under control.
Thank you so much for your help. I will continue the search but My gut feeling is not good for the kitten. Thanks again. Peggy
