My cat is being tested for possible liver problems, she only recently became sick and stopped eating, I took her to the vet after 1 day of refusing food, she is 11 years old and has been very healthy up until the last few days except for a bad canine tooth she has that the vet knew about. How is her prognosis? I will do annything to save her she is my very beloved pet.

Dear friend,

The cure for liver dysfunction is to get your cat eating. When the liver is not working properly it causes inappetite - that leads to less liver function. There is also a natural form of SAMe called Denosyl for cats.It can repair the liver. Give your cat one dropper of pedialyte every 10 minutes for an hour. Ten water down a/d canned cat food (get from vet) of Gerber chicken baby food (no onion) and feed her one dropper every ten minutes for another hour. Repeat this every two hours with two hours rest inbetween. Once she is on the Denosyl and you get food into her system she will want to eat.

Please keep in touch and let me know how it is going. If you have any more questions along the way I will always be here for you.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Thank you for your answer, I forgot to say that she currently is at the vet and will be staying overnight, they are performing blood test and giving her fluids, (he didn't mention food) the doctor is going to call me in the morning. Should I tell him about Denosyl? Is the feeding program you suggested for after she comes home?

Thank you

Call your vet right away and ask if he carries the Denosyl - if so she should be started ASAP - one 90mg tablet once a day.

The feeding program is for when she comes home but if she is staying at the vets ask if you can came in and feed her the a/d which your vet should carry. She will have less stress if she sees you and you visit.

Let me know what he says.

Sincerest wishes and prayers,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Thank you Terri,

I called my vet and asked if they could put her on Denosyl, they said they put her on a drug similar to that, and they have her on fluids. He is waiting for test results for her bloodwork before giving her more. They offered her food but she didn't eat it, so I am going down there this evening to see her and try to feed her a little something with an eyedropper like you suggested. I was surprised they didn't try to feed her manually. I will only be able to try once before I have to leave, but will be in contact with vet in the morning and I am sure he will have a course of action. I want to do all I can to help her.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Hi Terri,

Yes, I went to see my Vivian and she seemed O.K., they let me feed her some watered down AD with a syringe, I got her to eat a little, I tried feeding her until she seemed like she had had enough. The vet said that her wants to keep her until at least Saturday, that her liver functions aren't normal (he told me the numbers but I didn't write them down) and he wants to do an ultrasound but her temperature was just 96 degrees yesterday, so she is in a warming/critical care unit to bring her temperature up. She is on I.V fluids and he gave her antiiotics and also a drug similar to the one you talked about, he said to help her liver break the fat down. They are also force feeding her. I went yesterday to visit and tried to feed her again, she seemed like she just wanted to be left alone, I got her to eat a little (with syringe) but then I just petted her and she feel alseep on my hand. I was with her for about an hour, then I had them put her back to the warming area and re-hook her up to the I.V.

He still doesn't know what is wrong and wants to do the ultrasound when her temperature is more normal. I hate having her away from me for so long. I go in for surgery myself on Monday, so I hope that she is getting better by then because I will be so worried.

Thank you for your help. Sorry I wrote so much.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Hi Terri,

No, Vivian doesn't really like people food, and no tylenol. She probably has a few fleas, I haven't used Advantage in a few months because she wasn't really scratching and I didn't see any. Her gums do look kind of pale, but I think they always look that way. The vet said that her red blood and white blood cell count were good.

When I talked to the vet yesterday he said that her temperture was below normal and they were trying to bring it up, that is why they have her in a special warming unit. They got her temp up to about 97.7 but it didn't stay there, it has dropped as low as 95.5. He wanted to do an ultrasound to help diagnose her aliment, but apparently they have to sedate them for that and he won't do that with her temp so low.

I went to see her this afternoon (my husband went too) and she was gload to see me and purred alot, I brought her treats and some Friskies, but she wasn't interested. The technician brought me some watered down AD and I gave her a little with a srynge, but she fought me and I didn not want her to choke, some came out her nose. (Any tips on doing this better?) She was not happy with this! I managed to get a little food down her. Then I just cuddled with her and she went to sleep. I asked the vet if they were force feeding her and he said that they weren't now since her temp was low she could not digest the food, but she is on fluids and dextrose. Surprisingly she looked pretty good, I think she is sad being away from home and my husband and I.

Do you think her temp will return to normal? If her red blood cell count is normal does that mean she desn't have anemia?

I've been racking my brain to think of what could have made her sick, all I can think of is that we have been have alot of construction done outside the house, it scared her at first but she seemed to get used to it. She hides back in the bedroom farthest away from the noise. But I was home with her alot the first week because I was home sick, last week I worked away from the house and wasn't home as much. Her brother is an outside only cat (he is a cronic spayer) and he is healthy as a horse, and her is even more scared of people.

I wish I knew how she is going to be, I go in for surgery on Monday and this situation is very hard, I really don't want to miss seeing her. My husband will visit for me if she is still at the vet. I don't want her to die. : (

Thank you for listening.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Good news!

Vivian is doing much better. Her temp has risen to nearly normal and she is holding it on her own and they took her out of the warming area. She looked much better, stood up as I brushed her and purred alot more. The doc gave her an appetite stimulant and she ate on her own for them.

Her liver functions are much better, not quite normal yet, they are keeping her over the weekend, but the vet said that she "turned the corner" with what is wrong with her and seems to be getting stronger. One of the technicians said that she was a little cranky, which is good because before she was listless.

Her gums look pink again (and her nose). He still don't know what is exactly wrong or the cause, they treated her for the liver problem, I think he wants her as stable as possible to do any further tests. I hope to bring her home soon!

Thanks Terri,

Melanie
