Urinating outside the litterbox

My seventeen year old female cat has suddenly stopped urinating in her litterbox although she continues to defecate in the box. I discovered after a few days that she had been urinating on the carpet in a semi-hidden corner of the room. There have been no changes in the household or in her daily routine and I see no change in her personality.After disinfecting the carpet I covered the area with newspaper and moved her litterbox into the corner and blocked up the space the litterbox used to occupy.
I'm baffled. Any suggestions?
