cat coughing

My cat has been seen at the vet for coughing, sort of like a wheezing sound and then some coughing. At first I thought it may be a hairball, but the vet said that coughing could signal asthma in cats. She has had an exray which showed irritated lungs, so the vet gave her 10 days antibiotics, plus predisolone tablets for 10 days. She has had a break from coughing for 2 weeks, and now last 2 days coughing again.
I was told to give her 1/2 pred tablet whenever I notice coughing. Is this all that it could be. I hate to spend another few hundred on test only to find out that I need to administer pred for coughing as I notice symptoms. Thanks,
