Are there any medications I can give my cat for pain ...

Are there any medications I can give my cat for pain that I might have in my medicine cabinet? It's nighttime and I can't take him in until the morning. He's very listless. Just lies on the bed and occassionally cries out. If I can avoid taking him to a 24hr emergency vet center I will. We have a 7 month old child and are on a very tight budget.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: Well, that's a good question. Yesterday I noticed he'd hop in the litter box but I don't think he ever went to the bathroom. Right now, he's lying on the bed, belly down, with his tail a little raised in the air. Not all the way up, but about 20 degrees. I can stroke him down the back and along his sides and he doesn't seem to cry out when I do that, but when I get near his rear and the base of his tail, he'll cry out a little. I also noticed that he doesn't seem to have cleaned himself down there lately, either. It felt like there was some crusty matter in the hair around his rear, below the tail. He's a little overweight, but grooming has never been a problem before. Also, he just laid there and let me check him out. He normally never just lays there. His normal habit is to raise up and move when someone starts petting him and he purrs like a log saw. No purring right now, either.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: I don't know if he's unable to urinate or move his bowels. I think he may be unable to, however, as there really wasn't anything in the box to clean out when I got home from work today. We have two cats (the second one is fine), and I definitely didn't see the results of two cats in the box that I normally see.

There is food in his bowl, but I don't think he's eaten any of it. I can't tell if he's been drinking any water, as we have a big reservoir jug for water that I fill every week. I filled it just a couple of days ago and it's still 1/2 full.

I haven't seen any signs of diarrhea, but as far as being constipated...he wasn't a few days ago.

Dear friend,

If your boy is unable to urinate this is a MEDICAL EMERGENCY - where his bladder could burst and he could die. He will have to be cateterized to save his life so you need to get him to the ER ASAP!!!

If he is unable to deficate that is MUC less serious and he can go til tomorrow that way.

Feelin the middle of your boys tummy for a walnut sized oject that would be a full bladder. If he has that take him to the ER right away. If he can urinate and he is just constipated give him some cows milk as most cats are lactose intolerant.

PLease let me know which it is. I will stand by to hear from you.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: It's difficult to tell, as I mentioned before, he's a little overweight. I had him lie flat on his belly and probed his abdomen and thought I might have felt something when I placed my hands in from the sides just in front of his back legs.

I found a website that had a diagram of a cat's anatomy to give me a better idea of where the bladder is located and when I went back to check once more, I couldn't find what I found the first time.

He didn't really have any problems with me probing him in his abdomen. The only fuss I got was in making him lie on his belly (he'd been laying on his side at that time).

If you cannot be sure he can urinate you need to have him seen tonight because if his bladder bursts he can die.

I know the ER is expensive so see if www.carecredit.com wil loan you money for his care.

Please let me know what happens.
