I too go by that same theory that dry food should be offered but canned or moist packets actually be their main staple. There is still ongoing research on this matter, but the thought is that cats are carnivores by nature and the dry foods are loaded with carbohydrates, moreso than the canned diets. The higher carbs I believe is part of what is causing the extreme weight issues we are seeing in our house cats. The dry diets also offer very little moisture which leaves a cat living in very mild dehydration and prone to developing bladder issues (stones and crystals) unless they are huge water drinkers. Currently I am experimenting with one of my own feline males at home. Since I acquired him off the streets at just 3 weeks old he has had barely a morsel of dry kibble. He is now three, still young and still early yet he has had no bladder infections, his weight is still perfect at 10.4lbs (he is a long cat) and he is neutered. Even his teeth are still in great condition. I was warned by one of the vets that I work with that his teeth will be in ill health by the time he is 5. So, I brush them daily and sometimes just 3 times a week. In my eyes this is the only thing that the dry food is good for is oral health and to satisfy the chewing need, but really if you do not brush using dry food may only extend the need for dental cleaning by a couple of years. The current diet I am using is Nutro indoor cat formula on my other two cats who too have been in great health though those two are slightly overweight. And the male has the soft moist packets of Nutro indoor cat. Nutro diets are all natural, contain no corn, and no wheat and they have a wide selection of Adult cat foods. Feeding strictly moist high quality diets provides all the nutrients your cat needs without the additional carbohydrates.
