Question

Eye problem with kittens

Sent to Cat Experts September 11, 2006 9:00 a.m.

I took in an outdoor cat who was pregnant. I managed to get her to the vet and she tested negative for feline leukemia. They didn't want to sedate her becuase she was pregnant so they weren't able to do any other tests as it took three of them to hold her down and draw blood. She has a brown discharge from her eyes but otherwise has no other symptoms like coughing or sneezing and her coat looks great. Her stool sample showed roundworms so she was treated for that just before her kittens arrived a little over two weeks ago..

Their eyes have opened and a couple of the kittens look as if one of their eyes may be stuck shut. Could this be from an infection passed on by mom? or is this normal?

Thank you for your help. I am thinking of taking the little one that looks the worst to the vet to get an opinion.

ACCEPTED Check Mark

Little kitties whose eyes are not completely open have a condition called neonatal conjunctivitis. This occurs when the skin of the eyelids does not completely separate. The glandular secretions from the mucous membrane below cannot escape from the eye, so it builds up. If you can take a wet cotton ball and gently tease the eyelids open, they usually separate quite easily. These are not infected.

As for the mother, if her eyes are not red and goopy, but just have brown matter, whe may have a blockage of her lacrimal duct that drains tears fom the eye to the nose. Have the vet check the cat as soon as you can get her back.
