not useing litter box all the time

My Tabby male spaded cat has ALWAYS used his litter box, evan though he has had to live in a motor home at times. We have moved and he will sometimes use the litter box and sometimes urinate on the carpet. i have tried putting his nose in it , taking him to the litter box, spraying stuff to "break the habit. Why would he do this after all these years? Why would he use the box then don't use it?   Please Help, thanks, Linda
