I have a cat that is constipated. She meows when trying to go, but is not successful. It is a holiday and no vets are available in our small town.

Hi,

You can try giving your cat 1/2 teaspoon of mineral oil (buy at a drugstore or supermarket in the medicine aisle) mixed in some of her canned cat food.

You can also give some hairball remedy/laxative like Laxatone or Petromalt available at Petsmart, or any pet supply store. Squeeze a one inch strip of gel onto her front foreleg, right above the paw and she'll lick it off. If you can't get the Petromalt, etc., and have plain Vaseline in the house, offer her a small glob on your fingertip and she should lick it; if she doesn't, put a little on the tip of her nose (not near the nostrils) and she should lick it off.

A teaspoon of plain canned pumpkin (NOT pumpkin pie filling) mixed in her food daily, should also help the problem.

Is she eating and drinking on her own? How long has it been since she defecated? Is she urinating normally?

Try to give her some extra fluids by dropper--mix one cup water with a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar (as long as she's not diabetic), and give her a dropperful 3 times an hour.

She really should be seen by the vet to determine the cause of the constipation and make sure she doesn't have an obstruction from a hairball or something else. If you have no vet ER center in your town, bring her in tom'w if she hasn't defecated, and even if she has, I still think she should be evaluated, to stop this from happening in the future.

Good luck, and please keep me posted on how she's doing. Thanks!

Cher
