My cat for the past month has been not eating as much lately and he has been losing weight. I was feeding him dry cat food and when I switched to wet catfood he started eating more. I also noticed that he was making some chewing motions with his mouth but there was no food in his mouth. This morning I woke up and the cheek area is all swollen and he is not eating. He is doing alot of sleepng as well. I am worried what do you think this is?

Hi,

From your description, it sounds like he may have an infected tooth or gum and definitely has to see the vet. You should get him in as soon as you can (today), to have his pain alleviated and he'll probably need antibiotics, too. Also, not being able to eat because of this problem will, of course, adversely affect his health.

Try to get him seen today if at all possible.

Keep me posted on how he's doing and what the vet says. Thanks!

Cher

Reply to Jessesmom's Post: Have you seen this type of an ifection before? Also it appears that his eye is being affected, kind of cloudy looking. I don't have alot of money is this going to be expensive?

Hi again,

This type of swelling may also indicate a sinus infection or other problem in the sinus cavity, and because you now mentioned his eye is looking 'cloudy'--does it look like his third eyelid is coming out from the inside corner of his eye and covering the eye partially or totally? If so, the third eyelid shows when there is illness in the body, and/or there is a specific eye problem.
The teeth, sinuses, eyes, are all in this 'shared' area, so the problem has to be located by the vet in order to have it treated in the best way possible.

I can't tell you how much it would cost, because it depends where you live and what has to be done at the vet's. Initially, an office visit should be all you have to pay for. Here are some websites with helpful information in finding lower-cost vets. Some might even treat your cat 'gratis', if you have extenuating circumstances:

http://www.fveap.org/sys-tmpl/door/
http://www.hsus.org/ace/11875
http://www.carecredit.com/

and this one contains links to other sites:

Also, inquire at the vet if they will accept installment payments over a period of time to make it easier for you.

Please keep me posted.

Cher
