Hi,
Your cat most likely has a urinary tract infection or crystals, and this must be diagnosed through urinalysis by the vet. Crystals are tiny, sandlike particles which develop in urine that is not pH balanced. These are irritating to the lining of the bladder and/or urethra and might clump together to form a dangerous urinary obstruction--especially in male cats! If you mention that your cat is urinating 'a lot' today, that's good, if you mean 'a lot' is coming out each time. If 'a lot' means he or she is visiting the litterbox frequently, but only 'dribbling' small amounts of urine each time, this is another typical symptom of a urinary infection or crystals.
Urinating on a blanket is common for cats who have discomfort upon urination--they usually avoid the litterbox because they associate the box with the discomfort and think if they urinate on a 'soft' surface, like a blanket, it won't hurt.
Please take your cat to the vet ASAP to find out if s/he has a urinary infection or crystals and treatment (most likely antibiotics) will be prescribed. Crystals can also be treated with dietary changes and/or supplements.
Good luck! I hope your furbaby feels better real soon!
