My cat is shedding excessively, even pulling out his hair. He is an only cat. Is he lonely or could it be an allergy?

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: he is about 2 years old and he was rescued from a household of 65 cats! He is alone a lot at our house. There hasn't been a change in his food or litter. The only recent stress was that he got outside and was hiding under our house for hours before he came out.

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: I've only had him about 6 mos. He could have been a flea bag at his former home. He was probably treated for them before he was adopted out, we got him at Petsmart. I have not seen any fleas on him since we''ve had him.

Dear friend,

He could have an allergic reaction called miliary dermatitis or ringworm which you can see here:

www.fabcats.org/ringworm.html

www.sniksnak.com/cathealth/mil-derm.html

He can also have a food allergy if he is fed foods with corn, wheat or gluten. Of course he can be lonly since he was used to being around so many cats.

I would give him a daily multiple vitamin containing omega 3 fatty acids. Also give him a teaspoon every day of plain yogurt to keep "good" bacteria in his system.

If you think he has miliary dermatitis he would benefit from a steroid shot. If he is lonely he would probably like to have a little cat friend so perhaps you would consider saving another baby.

Thanks for rescuing him from that awful life and giving him a wonderful new home. May God bless you!

Please let me know if you have any more questions. I will be happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
