Blood in Urine

One of my cats appears to be having extreme difficulty using the washroom. He just spends endless time in the position with no results. There is a bit of blood mixed in with the drops of urine which come out. Three months ago he switched from wet and dry to just dry food. This problem seemed to first occur then but cleared up. Could it just be a dehydration problem or might it be something more serious? If it is dehydration what can I do besides the obvious of encouraging him to drink more water (ie some immediate fix)? Thank you.

Dear friend,

This is a urinary tract infection, stones or crystals. It is very serious in a male and can quickly become a medical emergency. If he becomes completely blocked and cannot urinate his bladder could burst and he would have to be catheterized to save his life. The quick administration of antibiotics can avaoid such a serious outcome.

If this is a chronic problem he should not be fed dry food. Feed canned only and add water to that. A few drops of fish oil daily improve kidney function. One daily drop of unsweetened (only) cranberry juice will make the bladder inhospitable to UTI bacteria in the future.

Please let me know how your cat is later and if you have any further questions. I will be happy to help.

Very sincerely,

Terri
