Hello - I have a cat that is lethargic. I have taken him to the vet and it was determined that he has a fever of 104. Blood work and a physical examination were done and nothing was found. The vet gave us amoxi for an antibiotic to help with his fever but all he dose is throw this up. The vet also said that he is very healthy otherwise. Tigger has been laying around now for about a week with no change. He barly eats or drinks. I also talked to the vet again and she said she could try another blood workup $250! to look for other things. She said it may be lukemia or possibly heart worm. Tigger has never been outside.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Jon

No to the people food and we have never seen him chewing on plants and he dosen't play with toys.
He pukes occasionally with very little hair but contains mostly unchewed food
we have always fed him purina one dry food
The vet has also said that she would try an xray to see if there was anything she could find. During the physical exam tigger never indicated any pain.
Thanks

Dear Jon,

A fever indicats an infection somewhere in the body. I doubt if Tigger has FELV or FIV as those compromise the immune system and usually the cat runs a low grade fever. Since he has not ingested a non food item we have to look for an inflammation somewhere. I am guessing it is in the GI tract. Since he cannot tolerate the amoxi drops you can try giving it with food and see if he can hold it down. In the meantime - take him off all cat food. Feed him nothing for the next two weeks except chicken baby food with no garlic or onion seasoning and a teaspoon of plain yogurt every day. If he does not want to eat - get unflavored pedialyte and give him one dropper every 10 minutes for an hour to replace his electrolytes. Then water down the baby food and dropper feed that one dropper every 10 minutes for an hour. Keep alternating until he will eat. He MUST eat or his liver can fail.

Please let me know how thi sis working out. I will always be here and happy to help you.

Very sincerely,

Terri

Reply to Terri Riba's Post: the vet has said to stop the amoxi since he can't hold it down. So we would mix this with the baby food? and when we are alternating between baby food and pedialyte hourly is that continuously till he eats on his own or once a day for an hour each?

Sometimes they are able to tolerate it if is given with food. Do not mix it - just try it after he has eaten. If he throws it up again - then just forget it.

When you first start do it for four hours - then let hir rest for four hours and then start again. Once he is hydrated he should perk up and want to eat.

Let me know how he is doing after the first four hours.
