Your cat needs to be seen by a veterinarian there is one issue inparticular that needs to be looked for. Indolent ulcers or rodent ulcers can occur in cats at a very young age. Click on this link for more information. Rodent ulcers

When you opened the mouth you said you noticed what appeared to be a hairy substance. This could infact be hair or string wrapped up in his mouth and around his tongue. I have seen cats have string wrapped underneath their tongues for such a long period of time that it actually had cut off the circulation to it. His behavior that you are seeing right now is not normal hairball presentation at all. He should be seen by a veterinarian to determine the cause of his condition and get treated immediately.

He could also be having difficulty breathing. I don't want to take up too much of your time as he needs to be seen, but if you have questions after his visit please repost so that we can help you further.

Thank you

Theresa
