hairballs

my female cat who is 5 , has a lot of problems with hair balls , is it okay to give her a tsp. of olive oil , once every couple of months .

You can do it a couple times a month if you need to. Hairball remedies for cats are two types usually. One is a fiber to help push hairballs through the system. The more common is petroleum jelly based - they just add flavorings to it. So you can give some plain petroleum jelly by rubbing a dose on the front leg for them to wash off for hairballs.
However if your cat vomits all the time and often vomits undigested food you may find that swapping to a high quality cat food will help. I know that when I swapped my cats to a food with no corn, wheat, soy, or chemical preservatives the vomiting pretty much stopped except for hairballs in shedding season.
