Cats rectum

Our 6 year old fixed and declawed female is having problems with her rectum. A clear to brown liquid is escaping and her rectum seems wet and irritated all the time. It has happend before and the problem seems to clear up on its own. My sister is a vet tech. and explained that is was a cyst or something like that, I cant quite remember what she said. Anyway the problem is back and discharging lots of fluid and even an occasional nasty looking pile!! Any suggestions?

Dear friend,

This is NOT a serious issue. It can be smelly and obnoxious but does not endanger the health of your cat. Any vet or groomer can express the glands but it is easer to feed your girl certain products that will enable her to express them when she moves her bowels.

Put a teaspoon of canned pumpkin (not pie filling) in her wet food every day. This will add fiber and bulk and more thw anal gands in a normal way. In addition, give her a teaspoon of plain yogurt. This will put "good", bacteria in her gut and get rid of that awful odor. It is NOT necessary to put any cream on it - it will resolve with the use of these products.

Please let me know if you still have questions or would like to discusss this further. I am happy to help in any way possible.

Very sincerely,

Terri
